Can I obtain a Divorce or Dissolution Online?

Parties in Ohio cannot obtain a divorce or dissolution online.  While certain counties allow documents to be completed and submitted via an online e-filing system, the parties still are required to physically appear before the judge or magistrate for a final hearing before a judge will finalize a divorce or dissolution.

In the case of an uncontested divorce or dissolution action, some counties also allow the parties to refer the case to a retired, private judge.  This process allows the parties more flexibility in choosing the date and location of the final hearing (most often at a party’s attorney’s office), rather than having the court decide the date and having the final hearing at the county courthouse.  There is an additional fee associated with utilizing a private judge; however, many couples find that the fee is nominal and well worth the additional cost.
